WiseGEEK (2012) defines New Media as “any type of application meant to transfer information via digital techniques, computerized systems or data networks. Most forms of this technology are interactive and contain compressed data designed to be accessed in a variety of markets.”
In other words, emerging media is more than just the latest “fad” in marketing terms. Much more than that, the collective emergence of digital and mobile platforms and utilities have reshaped the very ways in which the collective world population lives, communicates, and connects with one another. More over, the growing multitude of new media functions and features ensures that regardless of individual preferences, needs, or requirements, these applications have something for everyone.
Many argue that the current explosion of new media technology can be linked directly to the growing prevalence of mobile platforms. Chris Joseph of Demand Media (2012) opines, “If you find it hard to imagine life without your smartphone or other wireless communication device, you are not alone. Wireless technology has become an essential part of life in many parts of the world as of 2011, reaching even some of the more remote regions of the planet.”
Through mobile platforms, we now utilize digital sites and applications to carry on with our daily lives and activities. Facebook, Skype, Foursquare, Twitter, and YouTube have replaced our reliance on traditional media types such as TV, radio, and print. New media has taken the power that once resided with big businesses and brands, and placed it in the hands of you and me.
In essence, emerging media had created the potential for each of us to shape the world as we see fit. New media and marketing advisor Isra Garcia (2012) believes that “New Media converts us into authors, publishers, protagonists, leaders, role models, lobbyists, affiliates, middlemen and information exchange points. New Media offers us a blank sheet where we can draw the lines of our personal brand.”
If you still don’t believe that emerging media presents some type of value for everyone, then I’m afraid that, You Don’t Know Whatcha Talkin’ Bout Willis…
